The quiet death of cheap chain pizza

What was the dominant casual-dining segment is becoming a footnote.

Five years ago, the Domino's-style chain pizza segment was the default casual evening for a sizable portion of Pattaya. The marketing budget was big, the delivery infrastructure was in place, the price point was unmissable. Three locations, then four, then five.

It hasn't worked out. The chains have either closed branches outright or quietly downsized. The reasons are not mysterious: independent neighbourhood pizzerias started opening with proper Neapolitan ovens at not-much-higher prices, and the customer base — even casual customers — noticed the difference within one or two visits.

The interesting downstream effect is that the bottom of the Pattaya pizza market in 2026 looks more like a wood-fired pizzeria than a chain delivery. That's structurally different from what was true five years ago. It also means most current Pattaya residents now consider chain pizza a downgrade, not an upgrade, from a casual sit-down — which would have been a surprising claim in 2021.
