Pratumnak — the cliff and the hill
Pratumnak is the hill separating central Pattaya from Jomtien. It is wealthier than the strip below it, residential, expat-heavy, and home to several of Pattaya's most photographed clifftop restaurants. The dining is dominated by view-driven destinations, fine-dining holdouts, and Thai institutions that have been there since the 1980s.
Six of the guide's ranked restaurants are on Pratumnak. The Sky Gallery (clifftop, rope swings, sunset is mandatory) and Rimpa Lapin (cliffside Thai institution with arguably the best sea view in Pattaya) anchor the view-dining tier. Cabbages & Condoms anchors the social-mission Thai. Sugar Hut anchors the long-running Royal Thai institution since 1986. Mata Hari and Hilltop anchor the European-fine-dining hill. Royal Grill Room at Royal Cliff anchors the wine-cellar/Chaîne des Rôtisseurs tier.
Reach Pratumnak from central Pattaya in 8–12 minutes by car, 12–18 from Jomtien. The hill roads are narrow and steep in places — Grab is easier than driving yourself. Most clifftop restaurants are reservation-friendly for sunset; arriving 30 minutes before sunset is the move.
PRATUMNAK BY MOMENT
- Photographed clifftop sunset: The Sky Gallery Pattaya — rope swings, hammocks, panoramic Gulf views.
- Cliffside Thai institution: Rimpa Lapin — arguably the best sea view in Pattaya; deep-fried sea bass.
- Royal Thai institution since 1986: Sugar Hut — teakwood compound with wandering rabbits and peacocks.
- Cellar fine-dining: Royal Grill Room — Thailand's only underground wine cavern, 1,000+ labels.
- Quiet European garden terrace: Mata Hari — pan-seared foie gras, port reduction, ocean view.
"Pratumnak is the hill where Pattaya quietens down. The cooking is more deliberate. The view is doing half the work, and the kitchen knows it."
